Tata Motors surpasses Honda to become India's 4th-largest carmaker

New Delhi: Tata Motors can now proudly claim to be the country's fourth-largest carmaker in India, as it zoomed past Japanese manufacturers Hondadue to 19 percent sales increase in the current financial year. Honda, on the other hand, registered a sales increase of 17 percent.

It may be noted that between April last year and January 2018, Tata Motors sold 1,49,284 passenger vehicle units as against Honda's 1,44,802 units during the same period. In 2016-17, Honda has sold several thousand units more than the home-grown carmaker, with 1,57,313 vehicles as against Tata's 153,151 units, according to data available. However, Honda says it is undeterred by the current change in order, claiming to be riding comfortably in the Indian market.

Honda President and Chief Executive Officer Yoichiro Ueno said the company always aims to achieve highest market share, adding that the company requires at least 10 percent share in the Indian market to have a "sustainable position". Currently, the Japanese carmaker has 5.33 percent market share, making it the fifth largest in the vehicle market in India. It may be noted that only two vehicle makers - Hyundai (16 percent) and Maruti Suzuki (50%) - have market share in double-digits in India.

As per its CEO, Honda has a good market share in big cities but it has struggled to penetrate sub-urban areas. "We have dealerships in tier-II and tier-III cities," said Ueno.

Honda plans to launch SUV in Rs 12-15 lakh range

Moving on to Tata Motors, the company's future roadmap is focused on moving to the third spot by the end of 2019. The company made a massive recovery last year, with three new vehicle launches - Hexa, Tigor, and Nexon. All the three cars have been hailed as good products and were key in reviving Tata Motor's stagnant growth in the Indian car market.

Mayank Pareek, the president of passenger vehicles business, Tata Motors, said the company is optimistic that the growth momentum will continue to head in a positive direction. It may be noted that FY18 is all set to be the company's best year in terms of passenger vehicles business in the last few years.

Tata's Auto-Expo 2018 performance was also commendable and hinted that there are several exciting products it plans to launch this year. Reports suggest that a premium hatchback and an SUV are in the pipeline.
