Gems and jewellery have been an important industry for the Indian economy. It is one of the fastest Growing industries and a leading earner of foreign exchange for India. The gems and jewellery sector covers a wide range of items which include diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones, in addition to gold, silver, studded and costume jewellery. India exported gems & jewellery worth $43.2 billion during fiscal 2017, a rise of nearly 10% over the previous fiscal's export figure of $39.2 billion. The gems & jewellery exports figure in 2017 accounted for 15.7% of the country's total exports, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the trade body for the industry. G ems & jewellery exports grow by 12.32in 2016-17.

Major export destinations for gems & jewellery are UAE which accounted for 32% of the total exports, followed by Hong Kong at 30% and the US at 23%. The imports of rough diamonds also grew 21.6% in 2017 to $17.1 billion, compared to $14.1 billion in 2016. The USA has been the largest importer of diamonds for a long time and accounts for more than 18 % of world diamond imports. India has identified the potential in the large diamonds segment and has focused on increasing large diamond exports to the USA.

India is one of the largest gold importers in the world, and the imports mainly take care of demand from the jewellery industry. India imported 650 tons of gold in 2015-16. India is also one of the largest importer and consumer of silver in the world.

India is today the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing Centre.
